Since the image signal obtained by the current camera sensor cannot be used for distance judgment, the automatic driving system must be equipped with a range sensor.Millimeter-wave radar is currently the most cost-effective ranging sensor: better performance than ultrasonic radar, the price is much lower than laser radar.Therefore, millimeter-wave radar is a range sensor that must be carried by L2 and above level automatic driving system.


Millimeter-wave radar can detect the distance and orientation of surrounding objects by transmitting electromagnetic waves and detecting echoes, which provides a basis for signal processing and strategy judgment of decision makers. It has strong anti-environmental interference ability, good stability and high cost performance, and is a necessary supplement to camera sensors.The higher the level of autopilot, the more millimeter-wave radars need to be configured.Currently, in the mainstream self-driving models, 3 24GHz and 1 77/79ghz millimeter-wave radars are usually equipped in L2 level, while L3/L4 vehicles are generally equipped with 4-6 24GHz and 2-4 77/79ghz millimeter-wave radars.


Vehicle-mounted millimeter-wave radars are mainly divided into 24GHz(short-range) millimeter-wave radars and 77/79hz (long-range) millimeter-wave radars according to different signal frequency bands.At present, 24GHz millimeter wave radar is the mainstream product in the market.However, 77/79ghz products have smaller volume and higher precision, and the cost is gradually approaching to 24GHz products, so they begin to show the trend of replacing 24GHz millimeter wave radar.


According to the statistics of the shipments of zuosi, the 77GHz shipments in China's passenger vehicle millimeter wave radar market have increased from about 30% at the beginning of 2018 to more than 50% at the end of 2018.Compared with 24GHz products, 77/79ghz millimeter wave radar has higher technical barriers in both hardware and software.The biggest difficulty is reflected in its manufacturing process: the area of circuit board is small under small volume, the design difficulty of rf circuit is very high, the yield is also relatively low.Under the promotion of market expansion and technology progress, millimeter-wave radar product price drops significantly.Currently, the price of 24GHz is expected to be within 500 yuan, while 77/79ghz products are slightly more expensive than 24GHz products.
